Insulin acts on target cells to bind to specific receptors on cell membranes and activates many biochemical reactions, including phosphorylation of insulin receptors and other proteins. The detailed mechanism of insulin metabolism in different tissues and the exact transmitter of insulin is unclear. Calcium may be a neurotransmitter of insulin production, which is supported by the experimental observation that insulin directly inhibits cytosolic Ca ~ + -Mg ~ (2 +) - ATPase activity. Insulin can transmit information by altering ATPase activity. Interfering with this enzyme activity may produce insulin resistance. This article investigates the effect of insulin on the Ca ~ (2 +) - Mg ~ (2 +) - ATPase activity in the basolateral membrane (BLM) of non-insulin dependent diabetic (NIDDM) rats.
