Dublin is the famous collection of short stories by James Joyce. The work mainly portrays the life of the middle and lower classes in Dublin in the early 20th century and reveals all aspects of Dublin as a “paralyzed center.” The highlight of the theme is inseparable from the plot, but more importantly, the author’s writing skills in the use of words between lines. From the perspective of systematic functional linguistics, this paper analyzes the cohesion and coherence of discourse in the four aspects of vocabulary, relevance, allegation and literary extension with 15 stories in short stories as an example.
