一九三○年一月梅兰芳率领他的剧团人员来到上海,首次候轮去美国演戏,这是把中国的古老京剧第一次带到太平洋彼岸。当时的中国政府对此漠不关心,完全是梅兰芳自费出国。美国朝野对这次演出非常重视,把它看成是勾通两国文化的开始,所以梅兰芳一行到了美国,受到隆重热烈的欢迎。梅剧团访美为了节省开支,人事非常精简,除梅本人外,只有老生王少亭、花面刘连荣、武旦朱桂芳、二旦姚玉芙、李梦叔(兼任梅之秘书)六个演员。乐队也只有琴师徐兰沅、弦师霍文元、云锣马宝明等八人,加上其他工作人员,包括编剧齐如山、导演张彭春两位教授,
In January 1930, Mei Lanfang led his troupe team to Shanghai, and for the first time he came to the United States to stage a show. This was the first time that an ancient Chinese opera in China was taken to the other side of the Pacific. The Chinese government at that time was indifferent to this and it was entirely Mei Lanfang’s going abroad at his own expense.
