桂林中国画学院作为中国第一所中国画学院,它以中国画为单一专业,具有相对独立的教学体制,具有学士和硕士学位授予权。自2002年3月成立以来,已招收了三届本科生和硕士研究生。与其他院校国画系不同,桂林中国画学院在招生和教学方面进行了大胆探索,比如学生入学免试专业,只根据高考文科成绩录取;课程设置根据中国画独特的民族特征,取消由西方引进的素描课,取而代之以传统中国画的基础课程,力求将中国画这种古老的绘画门类传授方式与现代的学院教学方式相结合,走一条适合中国的中国画人才培养道路。
