志书内容选材的根本标准就是存史,从宏观到微观上都以此为依据,凡能够准确地、具体地反映事物的历史与现状的有用的资料,就应该设法保留下来。初稿资料的征集标准要在拟定的采用资料标准上低一个层次,以确保资料的全面性和可供选择的广泛性;在浩如烟海般的资料中确定一个较高的入选素材的标准,标准的选取要以能够足以反映整个行业或者社会全貌为基本准则;要求在选材时对同时期的同类材料进行比较、鉴别,选择其中最有代表性、最有价值、最能说明问题的资料,只有坚守入志标准而写出来的志书才有可信度和权威性。
