Objective To investigate the distribution characteristics of body mass index (BMI) and its relationship with other related diseases in Jiangyin residents. Methods From November 2007 to January 2008, residents in 537 households in 3 towns (streets) and 6 administrative villages (residents’ committees) in Jiangyin were randomly selected as samples by stratified cluster sampling method. Through the questionnaire implementation of household surveys and physical examination. Results The mean BMI of the sample population was (23.00 ± 0.19), and the overweight and obesity rates were 29.8% and 8.4% respectively. The overweight and obesity rates of urban and rural residents were 33.9%, 28.0%, 6.0% and 9.4%, respectively. Overweight and obesity rates were the lowest in the 15 ~ age group. Overweight and obesity rates showed an upward trend with age, and the highest overweight rate was found in the 45 ~ age group (44.9%) (13.8%) in the 55-year-old group. There was no significant difference between the married group and the unmarried group, and the obesity rate in the married group was higher than that in the unmarried group. There was no significant difference in the obesity rates among the groups with different educational level. The rate of overweight was higher than other groups. Hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia in overweight and obesity groups were significantly higher than those in normal group. Conclusion In recent years, overweight rate and obesity rate of residents in Jiangyin City have been on the rise. The prevalence of BMI is positively correlated with the prevalence of chronic diseases such as hypertension.
