There is a set of devices, which can measure the height of waterlogging on the urban roads and lower cloverleaf junction with electric water gauge and the rainfall with tipping bucket rain gauge. It gets its power from a set of solar panels. In addition, all relevant data are sent to the remote management platform through China Telecom’s CDMA 3G network before being transported to the relevant government departments.
This set of “Automatic Monitor System for the Water Logging on Roads and Lower Cloverleaf Junction” is one of the new applications for “Smarter City” that China Telecom presented in the China International Industry Fair 2011 (CIIF). According to the workers of China Telecom Shanghai, this system has been installed in the places where waterlogging frequently happens in the districts of Zhabei, Hongkou and the World Expo Park.
In the CIIF which was inaugurated on November 1, China Telecom presented the scenes from cloud technology-based life in a “Smarter City” with“Collecting the Wisdom and Shining the Future” as the theme. Smart politics, smart enterprises, smart logistics, smart medical care and smart home… there are all kinds of wonderful smart applications describe the brilliant life of the“Smarter City” in the future.
The exhibition stage for China Telecom in the W4 Center covered 362 square meters. The beautiful silhouette of urban life as well as the huge logo of China Telecom successfully attracted visitors. The whole stage was divided into five parts, each of which respectively shows the theme of Smarter City, Politic Affair Management, Social Livelihood, Smart Medical Care and Smart Home. More than 50 applications were exhibited there. With demonstration, communication and interaction, the main services of China Telecom are fully brought forth to perfectly show the “seamless broadband network, spectacular information content, meticulous considerate service and ubiquitous China Telecom”.
“The Smarter City is no longer far from coming true. It is turning from a concept into reality and progress is faster than ever before in every aspect of urban life,” said a director of a “Smarter City” solution supplier.
   MONET Changes Household Information Life
The exhibition area for household entertainment of MONET was the first part that each visitor could see when they entered China Telecom’s exhibition booth. The highly modernized household disposition exhibits China Telecom’s services based on the access to optical fiber, including smart TV, smart home appliance, smart house security and multi-screen communication. These fully show the great changes of household information life brought by the MONET and bring the imagination about “fiber-optic network to house, share of 100M wireless network and amenities of household entertainment”into reality.
The most eye-catching thing in this area is the smart TV. The huge 3D screen displays the IPTV 3D movies. During the interaction session, the 3D somatic game generated the opportunities for all-family entertainment. The show of video communication told us that we could have a face-to-face communication with our relatives and friends through mobile phones, computers, mTouch and IPTV.
The exhibition of application acceleration is the service that most fit in with the MONET users. The said application acceleration refers to broadband traffic the data upload and download take. The application which has gone through the acceleration will take less traffic and the network speed will be optimized to bring users better experiences. Users will not be upset by the bad network when they watch HD videos. In addition, the speed of data upload and download is increased, allowing users to watch online HD videos and download big files simultaneously. This will release users from the concerns about network speed.
China Telecom Shanghai launched the first round of increasing Internet speed of “Smarter City” on January 1. This October, the second round of increasing Internet speed was launched and accompanied by the campaign of“increasing Internet speed for MONET users, signing for free experiences and feedbacks for SMEs. In addition, the number of MONET users in Shanghai exceeded 1 million in October and China Telecom Shanghai plans to enlarge the MONET to cover 4.5 million users and increase the number of users to 1.3 million by the end of 2011. The average bandwidth will reach 8Mb by then and will increase to 50Mb in 2012. In 2015, the average bandwidth will climb to 50Mb.
   Smart Apps Become Indispensable

Next to the household entertainment area is the exhibition area for Smarter City. A huge sand table and the projection add brilliance and beauty toe each other, representing the information technology-based urban life in the future. Information about various kinds of conveniences and favors has been quite familiar to people and become an indispensable part of their daily lives.
Smart Politics is the biggest application of the Smarter City. Digital Urban Management, which is one of its services, fully brings the advantages of China Telecom’s mobile network into use. The grid management that Shanghai government advocates is adopted, in which the supervisors apply all-time monitoring and management. Each urban device is given a “digital identity”, which achieves timely and correct urban management and improves its working efficiency. It also saves cost in human resources, devices and above all, time. Presently, such application has been used in several blocks in Shanghai.
“Safe City” is an application that target public security department. It is mainly used by police stations, public security commanding center and other places that need instant video-based monitoring and allows them to invest less in renting these devices and increase their efficiency. Right now this application has been used in 8 counties or districts and the number of image monitoring spots has exceeded 6300 and the number will be increased to 10000 by 2013.
“Tax Application” is a service that enables users to declare tax via E-Surfing 3G mobile phone. Users can make use of cable and wireless network to get connected to the taxation system via the special network technology of China Telecom e-VPN and thus enjoy the Internet-based taxation services, including online invoice issuance, checking and comparison, invoicing monitoring and related analysis. The integrality of the data, the confidentiality of the information and the safety of network are therefore guaranteed.
From the applications in the exhibition, we can see that many products based on cloud computing can rely on the advantages of China Telecom and the cooperation with content suppliers to provide high-quality and differenti- ated services. China Telecom Shanghai devotes itself to the cloud computing technology research and product development. It will launch different kinds of services and products to meet different demand of all customers and contribute to the development of “Smarter City”.
   Unbound E-Surfing 3G
The section of mobile phone application is actually a place to exhibit the E-Surfing services. E-Surfing Video, E-Surfing Space, E-Game, E-Music, EReading and other E-Surfing products of China Telecom made a collective show in this exhibition. Different from the exhibition in 2010, there are many more contents within these products. For example, about one thousand new videos are updated every day for E-Surfing Video, covering movie, news, entertainment, sports and original contents. Presently, about 15 million users have subscribed to E-Surfing Video services. In February 2011, the frequency of use for streaming video exceeds 17 million times per day. tv189.com is a portal website of HD videos that E-Surfing Video launched for its broadband and MONET users to watch movies, variety shows and live broadcast. Till this February, tv189.com has 69 thousand pieces of contents and 113 live channels. In addition, visitors could find that each service in the section of mobile phone application has a two-dimension code. If they shoot a picture of the code with an E-Surfing mobile phone, the application will be automatically downloaded from the E-Surfing Space.
The application of “Augmented Reality” that is to be launched also attracts a lot of visitors. Users can take their E-Surfing mobile phones and aim the cameras at the Korean menu and the translated Chinese and English menus can be shown on the screen, in addition, the price which is previously shown in Korean won will be automatically converted into Chinese yuan. It is very convenient for people who have dinner in Korean restaurants. According to China Telecom’s workers, this application can be used to find and play movies based on their posters.
The fast development of E-Surfing 3G is attributed to the abundance of E-Surfing terminals. Many E-Surfing mobile phones are exhibited in the experience where users could experience their wonderful functions and performances. In the area of experiencing Somatic Game, many visitors used ESurfing mobile phones as the joysticks to play the game. E-Surfing 3G gives wings to China Telecom’s mobile services and helps them fly high up in the sky.
