文学批评近些年来成功地把自己弄成了一个不招人待见的角色,和刚刚过去不久的、被称作“批评的世纪”相比,新世纪以来的文学批评显得比较疲软。马修·阿诺德、埃德蒙·威尔逊、欧文·白壁德、诺曼·福斯特、李长之、李健吾、叶公超、茅盾、约翰·兰塞姆、莱昂纳乐·特里林、希利斯·米勒……无论他们是“纯文学”的,还是“文化研究”的;无论是左翼的,还是自由主义的:这些人都以他们的实践为文学批评树立了声名,但是,当下的批评家却在败坏他们苦心经营留下的遗产。
Literary criticism has succeeded in turning itself into an unmanning role in recent years. Compared with the “century” criticized in the recent past, the literary criticism in the new century has become rather weak. Matthew Arnold, Edmund Wilson, Owen Whitehead, Norman Foster, Lee Chang Chih, Li Jian Wu, Ye Gongchao, Mao Dun, John Ransom, Leonard Trilling, Hillis Miller ... Whether they are “purely literary” or “cultural studies”; both left and liberal: these people have established their names for literary criticism in their practice, but Nowadays critics are ruining the heritage they have left behind.
