A number of bacterial heme prosthetic groups whose structures deviate significantly from theubiquitous protoheme have been discovered recently. These new pigments contain dramatic modifica-tions in the aromatic core and/or side chains. Examples include heme d and heme o as well as hemed_1. Synthetic approaches of these macrocycles and their possible biosynthetic pathways will be dis-cussed.
