This article discusses the relationship between androgen and gene expression in rat prostate cells. Using cDNA cloning and hybridization techniques, nearly ten androgen-dependent proteins have been found in the prostate. The effects of androgen on steroid binding protein (PBP) and 20K protein gene expression are discussed in more detail. The hormone receptor complex binds primarily to the chromatin in the nucleus, which results in the activation of chromatin structure and the specific gene expression. Androgens can also influence post-transcriptional processing by causing changes such as increased Poly (A) polymerase activity. Finally, the chromatin structure of the target tissue and the distribution of the binding sites on the chromatin receptor complex are discussed.
