METAFORA is a simulation model for strategic decisions and assessments of mine loader-car operating systems. METAFORA has been used to evaluate the transport system of Boit Minerals’ Aitik mine, one of Europe’s largest open pit mines, with an annual output of 15 million tonnes of copper ores, located in northern Sweden. The number of class ore and waste stone loading obtained from the simulation is very consistent with the actual number loaded in the mine. The Idit Mining Shovel / Vehicle System uses shunting guidelines in the METAFORA model to simulate other scheduling control strategies. The results show that the criteria for increasing the car are roughly the same as those for the fixed car code (ore + waste rock), but the output of ore is 7% lower; the increase of the shovel guideline yields the lowest output. The METAFORA model is also used as an alternative to designing waste rock transportation routes. This paper shows that using METAFORA software can dramatically reduce the time, effort, and cost of designing and evaluating shovels / automotive systems.
