５月１２日凌晨至１３日晚１０时，台湾发生了一场延续４３个小时的大火，这场台湾历史上燃烧时间最长的火灾发生于台湾省台北县汐止东方科学园区，起火的是３栋２６层高的高级写字楼，在这３栋大楼里办公的大大小小几百家公司均在火灾中受损。据初步估算，大火造成上百亿新台币的损失。近年来，台湾经济不景气，失业率不断攀升，民众对政府的信心大降，这场大火被台湾媒体称为“雪上加霜”、“火上浇油”，“烧掉了经济与企业发展的心”……
