In a recent study published in the journal Science, researchers at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center found that immune cells in the brain play a direct role in the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) New treatments for neurodegenerative diseases offer hope. The researchers focused on a gene called C9orf72, where mutations in the gene lead to ALS and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). FTD is another neurological disease that usually causes changes in the patient’s personality, behavior, and language. Researchers have developed two mouse strains that lack the gene and found that the gene’s role in the immune system of the brain is important.
