In the field of criminal justice, French citizens can participate in judicial activities through the jury system. The jury system was introduced during the French Revolution. In principle, judges are all professional judges. However, for some serious criminal cases, ordinary citizens have a place in court because of juries. The jury consists of all jurors. In the Serious Crimes Tribunal, its members, in addition to professional judges, include several citizens with special qualifications, ie jurors. Because of this, people often refer to serious crime courts as “people’s courts.” This system of people’s assessors also applies to several other tribunals, such as the Children’s Court and the Court of Sentences in the Court of Appeal.
