According to a recent editorial article in the Journal of the American Medical Association, about 90% of all post-transhepatic hepatitis cases are non-A, non-B hepatitis, according to the Asian Medical News, Volume 4, Number 3 (1982) Frank L Iber, MD, of the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, the author of the paper, believes that further work is needed to isolate non-A non-B viruses. He said a promising approach to research is to study the enzyme from the liver known as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), which appears to be associated with increased levels of ALT with non-A, non-B hepatitis
