Just one week after the busy opening ceremony of its first store in Beijing, Eagle Electric Appliance, a subsid- iary of China’s No. 1 home appliance retailer Gome, did not draw much attention during the seven-day national holiday starting from October 1. Compared with the Gome chain stores where appealing sales promotions were carried out, Eagle is obviously low-pitched. Eagle is a high-end brand of home appliance chain stores invested by Gome chairman Wong Kwong Yu. In addition, many investment and real-estate subsidiaries owned by Wong are also branded with Eagle, whose simple black- and-white logo implies a high grade and superb taste. The goods sold at Eagle stores are not limited to home appliances. Its high-end commodities mainly in- clude top-grade acoustics appliances, furniture combina- tions and decoration designs. The Gome management hope Eagle will take on a professional look by shelving more imported top goods with refined dis- play manners and services. Wong Kwong Yu expects to open around 30 Eagle stores in the first-tier cities across China in the next three years. There will only be one or two stores in each city. Each store may cover an area of tens of thousands of square meters while the an- nual sales target will top 500 million yuan (US$ 63.2) at each store. Such a business plan is an obvious dupli- cation of the western home appliance retail mode. For the newly established Eagle Elec- tric Appliance, much has to be done to strike a balance between profiting with favorable prices and developing high-end customers.
