在灿若星辰的中国近代爱国人物中间,清军将领章高元的名字是不太为人所知的。 章高元,字鼎臣,安徽合肥人。他早年入淮军,隶属刘铭传麾下,因“其骁勇果毅,冠于侪辈”,所以很快被擢为副将。1883年12月,中法战争爆发,刘铭传奉命率部于次年正月东渡海峡,戍守台湾、澎湖,章高元亦随同前往。由于他“平日认真操练,临敌尤能奋不顾身”,遂被擢升为署澎湖镇总兵。
