Kobe Steel and Midrand Direct Reduction recently developed a hot metal production process to reduce the ironmaking process from hours to minutes. Kobe Steel, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and Midrand, a subsidiary of the parent company located in Chatuto, North Carolina, USA, look forward to commercializing the process within five years. When using this ironmaking method, the iron ore and pulverized coal pellets are heated to 1300-1500 ℃. The process uses natural gas instead of coke, iron ore reductant. According to reports from Kobe Steel, using the process of the new invention, the iron ore can be reduced within 6 to 10 minutes, whereas it takes 6 to 8 hours when using a conventional blast furnace. Allegedly, because the iron was produced when the melt-like, it can make the next steel-making production of the corresponding savings, but also the molten iron can be cooled into iron
