杨荫杭的一生可以1911年为界分成前后两个时期,前期以从事著译和出版活动为主,后期以从事法学事业为主。辛亥前杨荫杭在著译界有相当影响,但他主编的杂志、译述的著作、撰写的论文,至今几无人所知。本文着重从其著译活动的角度,对他前期的经历作一个简略的探讨。(一) 杨荫杭(1878—1945),字补塘、或称补堂,笔名老圃、又名虎头。早年投考在天津北洋公学,1897年由于参与学潮被开除,旋即考入上海南洋公学。1899年由公学派赴日本专门学校学习法政,有称其后毕业于日本早稻田大学。不久他就加入了留学界创设的
