From a narratological approach, the article analyses Boccaccio’s Decameron vs. Li Yu’s stories from three aspects: narrative pattrn, plot structure, and discourse style. By textual close-reading and with reference to the background of the works as well as historical conext, the researcher deliberates on the comparable narrative techniques of the two writers, such as elaborate stratification of narration, and dualistic contrast and balanced plot development, and jocular and ironic verbal styles. In addition, the inherent significance of the narrative forms are explored to reveal the meaningful relations between the narrators and stories: narration signifies life, whose values are restored and sought after by people suppressed by the darkness of agony. It is precisely the wit and. humour of these stories that won the heart of those suffocated by the deadening doctrines.
