Kuhar and Yamanura first used opto-autoradiography to conduct opioid receptor localization studies with the labeled opiate receptor antagonist diprenorphine and the agonist etorphine. Subsequently, in-vitro labeling techniques were developed that greatly expanded the understanding of the mechanisms by which opioids act on the nervous system through the study of opioids, opioid peptides and other opioid compounds. This technique, in turn, positions opioid receptor subtypes and confirms axonal transport of opioid receptors in vagal nerve fibers.
