I. INTRODUCTION One problem with electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring is the electrode’s contact with the skin. In order to obtain ECG records without artifacts and high fidelity, there must be good contact. Circuits for monitoring the state of electrode contact with the skin are scarcely reported in the literature. In some commercially available ECG monitoring systems, contact status is monitored by the patient’s DC power. As will be discussed later, this is not a good idea. This article describes a novel contact monitoring circuit. Moreover, simplicity and reliability have been taken into account in the design of this circuit.
