20世纪八九十年代,侯登科拍摄的一系列以中国当代社会为题材的纪实摄影作品,在记录个体的社会境遇的同时,自觉地思考了中国当代社会变迁与个体命运的关系,成为了中国当代纪实摄影的经典之作。他为摄影所做的努力,他在反复思考摄影与社会、摄影与人生之间关系时产生的内心纠结与痛苦,让他的影像以他的人生为底色,甚至与他的生命有了血肉的联系。他留下来的影像与文字资料既是研究20世纪末中国社会急剧转型期的重要文化个案,更是中国当代摄影史上一笔具有鲜明个人风格的珍贵影像遗产。
