The Welsh religious poet George Herbert, who spent a great deal of ink on the sacrament and the subject of taste associated with it, also gave a peculiar response to the intense and complex communal controversy on the European continent. Herbert’s Holy Communion had a radical to mild transition process, echoing the opposition of the Anglican Church to the controversy. This article argues that Herbert’s communion with Protestant reformers is consistent. And at a time when the Anglican Church was paying more attention to traditional rituals, Herbert’s religious position favored the state religion of Elizabethan.
