After World War II, faced with the arduous task of developing the national economy, India adopted the principle of utilizing foreign aid actively. Under the promotion of its national interest, the United States used aid as a tool for its foreign policy and also provided a great deal of assistance to India. From 1951 to 1961, India received more foreign aid than any less developed country had received in the corresponding period of economic aid, while the United States accounted for almost three-fifths of total aid. The U.S. economic aid to India has played an important role in changing India’s backwardness and improving the living conditions of the Indian people.
