俄罗斯风景画中神秘肃穆的气氛,苍茫博大的感觉与俄罗斯宗教绘画有着血脉的联系。艺术的早期形式都和宗教的关系密不可分,当然俄罗斯也不例外。基辅大公在向拜占庭帝国接受其希腊正教成为国教的同时,拜占庭的绘画伴随着宗教来到俄罗斯。因此俄罗斯的宗教绘画中,贯穿了拜占庭的美学思想。早期的宗教绘画目的并不在于艺术本身,而是为了信仰,为了让人从可见的形象中观照到不可见的本质,所以画像中的人物都是一些抽象的,非物质化的有机体,它们往往被置于一种非现实的空间和非自然的色彩中,以获得超越现实的效果。所以俄罗斯宗教绘画从其萌芽状态起,走的就是东西结合的道路,融合了两种文化的养分,一种是形象的希腊文化,一种是抽象的东方文化。
