磷钼酸和聚乙烯醇可组成固溶体,其内存在磷钼酸和聚乙烯醇的氢键缔合物。当可见及紫外光照射固溶体时,氢键缔合物中PVA仲醇基上的电子和光的电磁场相互作用,使其电子结构发生变化,同时磷钼酸也受激与聚乙烯醇在酸介质中发生光氧化还原反应,生成了含有三种价态Mo (Ⅵ,Ⅴ,Ⅳ)的磷钼蓝而显蓝灰色,它不同于磷钼酸和某些小分子醇类在一定条件下的光氧化还原反应。后者的反应是可逆的,而前者的光氧化还原反应是不可逆的,它发生不可逆的光致变色。
