Fish farms like Sardin account for 30% of the world's total fish catch. However, in many countries, people make a living primarily from the fishing of these fish. For example, in the Philippines (ranked by FAO as the 12th largest producer of fish in the world), per capita consumption of fish reaches 36 kg per year, well above the world average. There, far-sea fish more than 15 kilometers make up over 75% of commercial fishing. Most consumers of farmyard fish (fresh fish or fish products) are those with low incomes and those living below the poverty line. These species have also been exported for the country in exchange for large amounts of foreign exchange.
