傣族是一个文化悠久的民族,共约五十万人,聚居在云南德宏和西双版纳的平塡和河谷地带,新平和沿江也有一部分。他們不仅有以傣文写成的历史、神话、诗歌,有著名的歌舞,如孔雀舞、象脚鼓舞等,还有丰富的、具有民族风格的民间工艺。傣族人民自织自用的梭罗布,就是一种美丽的工艺品。不仅图案组织得美丽,而且图案極多丰富多样,二十几种花纹都各有名字和含义。著名的傣錦,更为大家所熟悉。傣锦的图案,几乎全都是几何纹样,而且以菱形图案为主。每个大的菱形單位,又由许多小的單个图案组成,构成一种富于变化而又不失为严整的效果。色彩的应用也很大胆,在一个菱形图案里,亮度相同的十几种色彩配在一起,对比强烈,却又统一于一个浓黑的底色里,给人一种热烈和鲜明的感觉。有的还加织金线,效果更为燦烂。傣族人民很喜欢用織錦打扮自己,所以挂包、披肩、帽子、被面等都用錦制作。
