Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” is strikingly similar to August Wilson’s “Fence” in terms of plot, character and theme, the latter being even called the black version of the former. However, the drama dramas of the two dramas have significant differences, reflecting the differences between the mainstream literary traditions and the African literary traditions. As the representative of the mainstream American drama, Miller’s plays are deeply influenced by the tradition of western drama and have obvious traces of ancient Greek drama, realistic drama and psychological drama. Afro-American dramatist August Wilson, while absorbing the tradition of Western drama, inherits the creative tradition of oral narrative, magicality and musicality of African American literature.
