As an inexpensive smelting method, the role of electric arc furnace is more and more obvious. In terms of economic efficiency and environmental protection, the usual exchange and DC electric arc furnace is not ideal. The purpose of a new study is to go beyond this current state. A new type of DC electric arc furnace, called “Comelt”, has been developed which has several electrodes tilted sideways into the furnace and produces a moving, tilting arc on the axis of the electrode. In the shaft furnace in the middle of the electric furnace, the hot scrap of the smelting process can be used to preheat the entire scrap and to collect the entire exhaust gas during each operating phase. This “Comelt” method shows many economic and ecological advantages. The EAF has a return on investment (ROI) of more than 30% and an investment payback period of only about three years.
