雾凇岛的雾凇,是松花江源源不断释放出的水蒸气凝结在两岸的树木和草丛之间,形成厚度达到40～60mm的“树挂”现象,远远超过国内其他地区普通树挂的厚度(多为5～10mm)。而“吉林雾凇”又是雾凇中厚度最大、密度最小和结构最疏松的雾凇品种—毛茸形晶状雾凇,观赏起来格外晶莹剔透,所以吉林雾凇更堪称为雾凇极品中的极品。
