Editor: Eaton’s research (see BMJ 2004; 329: 1124) argues that we need more drug monitoring mechanisms to protect public health. All medicines are at risk, some of which may be useful. If the drug’s efficacy is easy to visualize, its safety (low risk) must not prove: a lack of risk justification does not mean no risk.
