A new technique which combines the photoelastic testing with the digital image processing (DIP) technique is described in this paper, with which the photoelastic data are acquired, processed and analysed automatically. The technique has been employed to analyse the hot spot stresses of tubular K and T joints in offshore drilling platforms, and the results are satisfactory.
