晚明阳明学与禅学合流,学术思想与社会意识发生迷离与衰颓,致使学者们在思想上进行纠弹,其代表是东林学者。顾宪成认为,王阳明以主观性的良知取代朱熹客观性的天理,造成了世人在道德精神认识上的一个“空”字,以及在现实生活实践中的一个“混”字,因此,返归朱学之格物穷理是唯一的出路,而目标是要使学术能整肃人心、开物成务。整肃人心,便要在道德论域中求落实;开物成务,则要于民生日用的科学上求突破,这便使晚明思想以返归朱学的形式超溢出宋明儒学建设道德精神的主流。但是东林学者没有亲自来推进,而只是扭转了风气,拓宽了论域。
