In this poem, Pence gives a natural person, a Scottish farmer, healthy, happy, intelligent qualities. In fact, the poet conveys an intense love for his lover in his poem. He uses different images, such as roses, sea, and stone, to show his loyalty and perseverance to his beloved. The paper begins with an introduction of Robert Burns’s experience, especially his most famous short poem, “A Red Rose.” I will use the definition of stylistics, especially the definitions of science proposed by Richard and G. W. Turner, to analyze this theory in detail. The essay will then analyze the subtleties of the poem from two aspects of stylistic features, namely phonological features (including head rhyme and foot rhyme) and semantic features (including exaggeration and metaphor). In order to clarify some of the ways emotional expression in romantic poetry.
