ML has not been successfully cultured in vitro and has therefore affected research on leprosy for decades. The purpose of this article is to briefly comment on the status of research on some of the old problems of leprosy using modern immunology and DNA technology. Leprosy and Immune System An immunological response to ML in an individual is important in the pathogenesis of leprosy. However, it is unclear why certain individuals develop disease after ML infection, and the immune response to the ML antigen forms a clinical spectrum of leprosy from leprous tuberculosis-like cells that are well-immunized with cells that have marked defects in cellular immunity. All evidence suggests that tuberculosis-like leprosy activates macrophages and T-lymphocytes from the thymus
