Overview Drum is an easy-to-use, low-cost, medium-speed, and high-capacity storage device. It is a rotor coated with a magnetic material that turns inside a magnetic head housing. Formal designs need to be able to identify the effects of the following factors on drum characteristics: eccentricity of the rotor, consistency of head mounting, heads manufacturing tolerances and storage surface uniformity. The paper presents a formula that describes the typical drum signal-to-noise ratio and the threshold voltage required to ensure a reliable read amplifier. The choice of material is based on strength calculations and concludes that the most popular material for the drum rotor is the 2014-T6 aluminum alloy.
