The symposium on “Socialist Market Economy and Journalism” co-sponsored by the Press Institute of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Wuxi Daily and the Propaganda Department of Jiangyin Municipal Committee of the CPC held in Jiangyin in late May. Representatives attending the conference included 41 experts and scholars from news research institutes, universities and news agencies in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Heilongjiang, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces. The main academic points that will be discussed here are summarized as follows: 1. At present, our country is in the transition from a planned economic system to a socialist market economic system. This new historical development requires the news reform to speed up its pace, send a large amount of information and strengthen Public opinion supervision. News reform should be deep and shallow, alternating
