当代水墨有着双重的文化意义:“水墨”二字带有浓厚的中国传统艺术的色彩;但与之相关的活动已远远超越了水墨的地域与传统的范畴。从这个意义上看,“当代水墨”本身呈现着本土与国际、传统与当代的动态的关系。它向西方展示“什么是中国当代艺术”的同时,也引起了国内艺术界的思考:“当代水墨应以什么姿态呈现在西方?”“当代水墨”已然成为一个国际性的词汇。欧美许多艺术机构,如大英博物馆,波士顿美术馆等,已策划多个以中国当代水墨为主题的展览。佳士得、苏富比已经提前推出了水墨系列的展览。2013年底,在纽约大都会博物馆举办的大型展览“Ink
