Time rhetoric is a field that is often overlooked,as if it was nothing important.This paper claims that we should pay attention to statements about the “requirements of time” because they are often used as key points in persuasion.In argumentative situations authors do often defend their views with claims about their correct timing and tempo.This paper also claims that time rhetoric and historical argumentation are aspects in studies of the May Fourth Movement that have not been given enough attention.Although Social Darwinist slogans were repeatedly criticized in May Fourth journals as being signs of outmoded thought,the importance given to the necessity to adapt to the prevailing circumstances was still very strong.Because of this,different descriptions of the “new tide” had a central position in these journals.In many cases the spirit of new era was connected in these journals with the Kropotkin’s idea of mutual aid.
