木材是一种多孔材料,它由细胞壁、胞腔、纹孔等组合而成。表示木材的质量,通常引用“木材密度”这个物理量。木材密度是木材物理力学性质中主要指标之一,它和很多木材性质,存在密切的联系。因此,研究木材密度,对于了解木材构造、木材性质及木材利用问题是十分重要的。近年来,森林生态学的发展,更加重视生物量的研究。这对木材学又是个新的课题——怎样予测人工和天然更新后林产品的质量变化。也就是了解树木在不同生长环境中各种生态因子引起林木材质的变异。生长轮分析与木材密度的测定,对于了解木材材质的变异是一种积极而有效的途径。
