粤东地区尤其是粵东北的兴梅地区,是久负盛名的“山歌之乡”。“歌仙”刘三妹的历史故事就出在这里,成为当地人民的美传,虽说三妹是典型化了的人物,但她形象地展示了客家妇女热爱劳动、喜唱山歌,并且敏捷的聪明才智。晚清著名的爱国诗人,民俗学者、杰出的政治家、外交家黄遵宪(广东梅县人,1848—1905),在他的《山歌题记》中,曾盛赞客家善唱山歌的妇女说:“因念彼冈头溪尾,肩挑一担,竟日往复,歌声不歇者,何其才之大也.”
