来自道家鼻祖老子的“大音希声”,是一个跟音乐美学有瓜葛的奇特命题。翻开《老子》一书,“大”屡屡有见并具两种含义:一是大小的大,这是我们今天仍常用之义,如“大患”、“大国”;一是表示最完美的意思,此义为老子所专用,如“大道”、“大象”。而“大音希声”之“大”,就用的是后一义。 音乐是声音的艺术,“大音”运用到音乐上,可以说是“最完美的音乐”。可是,“大音”又何以“希声”呢?这个“希”字,《老子》14章解释得很明白,其曰:“听之不闻,名曰希。”即是说,并不是没有声音,而是听不见。既然如此,所谓“大音希声”,当然就是说天地间最完美的音乐,单单凭普通人的感觉器官是无法听见
