《花红竹翠鸟儿鸣》鄂栋臣此作构图较为完整,竹竿的墨色变化把握得比较好,竹叶与牵牛花叶遥相呼应,墨色的枯湿浓淡、疏密变化错落有致;红色的牵牛花在画面中十分醒目,且富有层次;一只鹩哥仰头鸣叫,给沉闷的画面增添了几分生机。大写意绘画以抒情和畅神为目的,神与情应通过练达的笔墨写出来,唯有强劲的笔墨功力方可尽妙。然而需要注意的是,画面中竹干的用笔缺乏力度,竹节生长处的笔法交待模糊;牵牛花的叶子缺少穿插的结构关系。
