Double-decker suburban buses have become commonplace in many parts of the world, including the western and midwestern United States. Over the past 25 years, more than 9,000 double-decker buses have been put into operation throughout the world. The Long Island Railway (LIRR) will order 12 trial-size double-decker buses with a capacity of 180 seats (120 seats for single-floor standard buses). The car will be commissioned at the Jefferson Port Extension in late 1990. If railways and passengers are satisfied with the use of such double-decker buses, an additional 108 will be added to the Long Island Railway. Massachusetts Gulf Transport also conducted a tender of 60-100 double-decker locomotive-towed coaches for suburban Boston transportation.
