Q: It’s amazing, really. I still remember when you got the character Wolverine, the casting of your role made headlines everywhere.
Hugh Jackman: I know, exactly: “Who’s Hugh” Who is this guy””
Q: So who is Hugh”
HJ: He’s just a guy from Australia. I was born in Sydney, spent a few years in Perth, went to Melbourne, met the love of my life and my first job, actually; bit of a fairytale start. And I’ve been working as an actor for several years now. I trained for four years and I’ve done a little bit of everything “done a little bit of singing, done some musicals. I’ve dressed up in a koala[考拉] suit in my day. I’ve been a clown[小丑] at kid’s parties. Then I played a super hero.
Q: Flushed Away is your first attempt in animation dubbing[配音]. How do you feel about it”
HJ: Well, I think it just took me three or four sessions before we really found the character. The character did change. He was more upper class and a little snobby[势利的], I suppose. I don’t know. It just took me a little while.
When you think about it, it’s a character like any other. From the first second, you’re working and you’re recording. I think the guys there were just really helpful in finding who this character was and for me to really make it my own. It’s fair to say it was challenging “more challenging than I expected.
Sometimes I remember getting notes like “We need to see more of this emotion coming through.”And I was like, “Wow, I thought I was doing that!”But you get used to film where you have so much more available to you to convey[传达] thoughts and emotions. So I did find it challenging but I loved it and I remember laughing a lot.
In terms of the look of the character, my son is almost seven and he knows exactly what animation is “he knows what live action drama is and all that sort of thing. But he looked at me about halfway through the movie and said, “Dad, that’s you, isn’t it” That’s not animation!”I was slightly depressed[沮丧的] at that point, and said, “What do you mean!”
Q: You even refer to James Bond in the movie. Was the reference deliberate[
HJ: The thing is, I think Roddy sees himself more like James Bond, particularly in the beginning. He has this great life, he zips around in this cool sort of car, Barbie is his girlfriend and he plays volleyball with Action Man注. (laughs)
Q: Do you think having kids helps you work in animation like this”
HJ: Having kids, it’s an absolute thrill[兴奋] to do a movie. I’m not being facetious[开玩笑的] at all here. When I was in the theatre with my son, sitting next to him, the look in his face…He said to me afterwards, “This is my favorite movie ever.”He can’t stop talking about it. When he was watching it, he couldn’t stop looking at me and it was one of the great moments for me in the business. He absolutely adores the movie.
For those of you who have kids, you know that if your kid likes a movie, you’re seeing it 100 times because they watch it over and over again. This is one of those movies that there’s a lot in it even for adults “it’s funny. I find it funny.
Quotations
◆ On Fear
I’ve always felt that if you back down from a fear, the ghost of that fear never goes away. It diminishes[弱化] people. So I’ve always said “yes”to the thing I’m most scared about.
◆ On Acting
It dawned[使明白] on me that acting was what I wanted to do with my life. Nothing had ever touched my heart like acting did…I’m an actor who believes we all have triggers[扳机] to any stage of emotion. It’s not always easy to find but it’s still there.
◆ On Fatherhood
It’s so different to be the father of a girl rather than a boy. I’m a little tougher on Oscar because he is a boy. But with my daughter, who is only ten months old, I just hold her and think, “I don’t want you to face anything bad ever in your life.
