AIM:To summarize the characteristics of patients sufferedfrom primary biliary cirrhosis associated with ulcerative colitis.METHODS:To report a new case and review the literatureRESULTS:There were 18 cases (including our case) ofprimary biliary cirrhosis complicated with ulcerative colitisreported in the literature.Compared with classical primarybiliary cirrhosis, the patients were more often males andyounger similar. The bowel lesions were usually mild withproctitis predominated. While ulcerative colitis was diagnosedbefore primary biliary cirrhosis in 13 cases, the presentationof primary biliary cirrhosis was earlier than that of ulcerativecolitis in our new case reported here. The prevalence ofprimary biliary cirrhosis among patients of ulcerative colitiswas almost 30 times higher than in general population.CONCLUSION:Association of primary biliary cirrhosis withulcerative colitis is rare.It should be considered in thedifferential diagnosis of hepatobiliary disease in patients withulcerative colitis, and vice versa.
