Three basic methods for writing fiber Bragg gratings using femtosecond laser are introduced: holographic interferometry, phase mask method and direct point-by-point method. The main mechanism of making fiber Bragg grating by femtosecond laser is discussed. The characteristics, laws and recent research progress of these three methods are discussed in detail. The unique properties of fiber Bragg grating fabricated by femtosecond laser are summarized.
