Red and white vines, common name for stems and rattans of palmaceae, represent the two main species of natural distributed rattan in Hainan Island - red vines and white rattan. Cane plants grow in the tropics and subtropics and are the major associated plants in tropical rain forests, monsoon forests and secondary scrublands. The world’s major vine producing countries are Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, the Indo-China Peninsula countries, northern Australia, and some countries in the tropical Americas and tropical Africa, up to hundreds of species. China’s Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, southern Fujian and Taiwan provinces have rattan distribution. According to the literature there are more than 20 species, while the most widely distributed in Taiwan Province and Hainan Island, is China’s major vine producing areas. Hainan Island has more than ten species, belonging to Calamus, Daemonorops and P1ectocomia three genera. Mostly distributed in the central mountainous island, rich in resources, production accounted for more than 80% of the country (excluding Taiwan Province), responsible for the main task of supplying the national vine raw materials.
